RB Leipzig are yet to speak to clubs about in-demand striker Timo Werner, with Liverpool and Bayern Munich reportedly interested in a summer move.

The German speedster has continued his rise to Europe’s striking elite this season, firing in 21 goals in 25 Bundesliga games as the driving force behind Leipzig’s title challenge.

Werner has long been monitored by top clubs after firing in 21 goals in 31 league games in 2016-17, and now at 24-years-old could be set for his big move.

However, as the coronavirus crisis rumbles on, neither of the two likely favourites for the signature have made a move.

‘Neither Jurgen Klopp nor Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (Bayern chairman) have contacted me,’ Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff told General-Anzeiger.

‘We are happy that we were able to extend the contract with him until 2023. He played a really strong first half of the season.

‘We also believe that we are still a very good stage for Timo Werner on which to develop as a Germany international.’

Werner has previously hinted that he fancies a move to Merseyside, saying: ‘They have Jurgen Klopp, the best coach in the world, who is German. There are a lot of things that would suggest that my playing style might be a good fit.’

Werner’s stellar season and Julien Nagelsmann’s side’s challenge has been interrupted by the coronavirus, with sport still on shutdown in Germany.

German football chiefs are desperate to restart the season to curb a financial crisis in the top two divisions, but the threat of 2019-20 being cancelled still hangs in the air.
