If it wasn’t enough for Lionel Messi to be part of an utter humiliation by Bayern Munich on Friday night then Leon Goretzka rubbed salt in the wound of his opponent.
Before kick off many believed that six time Ballon d’Or winner Messi was the only hope for Barcelona to beat their German opponents and get through to the Champions League semi-finals.
As it transpired Messi barely got a chance to make an impact on the game as the Germans ran riot in an 8-2 thrashing.
After the match Goretzka was weirdly asked about the Argentine superstar, with a journalist asking, “Messi must’ve been a childhood-idol of yours, did it hurt having to see him like this?”
Not one for sentiment the midfielder brutally replied, “No, it didn’t hurt, it was fun actually.”
Before the match Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had warned the 33-year-old that he wouldn’t be able to beat 19-year-old left back Alphonso Davies.
The teenager actually opened up about the fact that Messi was his favourite players growing up, revealing a conversation he had with his dad, “My mum called me yesterday and then my dad hopped on the phone, and he was like: ‘So you’re playing against your favourite player, I see.’ And I went: ‘Yeah.’ And then we both started laughing on the phone. And honestly we couldn’t even believe it, because he knows that I looked up to Messi when I was younger, and now playing against him, it’s really nice.”
It wasn’t the forward that needed warning about Davies though. The Canadian set up Bayern’s fifth goal on the night when he tore through Barca’s defence.
Even before Friday night it had been reported that Messi was fed up with left at the Nou Camp and he was ready to walk away from the club at the end of next season.
However he isn’t the first victim of the loss to Bayern with reports suggesting that manager Quique Setien has already been sacked, even though he only joined the club half way through the season.
As well as the manager, sporting director Eric Abidal has also reportedly been dismissed by club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, although he apparently won’t be stepping down.
It was the third season in a row that Messi and Barca have been dumped out of the Champions League in embarrassing fashion, after the comebacks by Roma and Liverpool.
