Man United slip to 10-man Newcastle as Carrick’s run ends

Manchester United’s unbeaten run under Michael Carrick came to a halt on Wednesday night as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to 10-man Newcastle United, conceding a dramatic late winner despite playing the entire second half with a numerical advantage.

United had cancelled out Anthony Gordon’s penalty through Casemiro before the interval, but Will Osula’s superb stoppage-time strike ensured the Magpies claimed all three points.

Newcastle strike first despite red card

Newcastle began with greater intensity. Kieran Trippier’s dangerous cross struck the post, while Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes both fired narrowly wide as the hosts pressed early.

United gradually worked their way into the contest. Kobbie Mainoo and Matheus Cunha forced Aaron Ramsdale into saves, and Bryan Mbeumo squandered a clear opening by blazing over with the goal at his mercy.

The contest turned late in the first half when Jacob Ramsey was sent off after receiving a second booking for simulation inside the penalty area.

Despite the setback, Newcastle took the lead when Bruno Fernandes fouled Gordon in the box, and the winger converted the penalty he won.

There was still time before the break for United to respond, as Casemiro rose to head home Fernandes’ free-kick and restore parity.

United fail to capitalise

With a man advantage, United were expected to take control after the restart but struggled to create clear openings.

Gordon nearly restored Newcastle’s lead, volleying wide from a corner early in the second half.

As possession tilted in United’s favour, Ramsdale produced key saves to deny Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, frustrating the visitors’ attempts to turn pressure into goals.

Just as the match appeared set for a draw, Osula delivered the decisive blow in the final minute, cutting inside from the right and curling a precise finish beyond Senne Lammens.

For United, the defeat marked a costly setback, a night where numerical superiority counted for little and Carrick’s unbeaten start came undone.
