Eliaquim Mangala is expected to be sold by Manchester City this summer as incoming boss Pep Guardiola looks to revamp the club’s defence, a source has told ESPN FC.
The source said City are now ready to cut their losses on Mangala, who joined the club for a reported £42 million from Porto in August 2014.
The France defender, who has made 51 starts for the club, has struggled at the Etihad Stadium and is behind first-choice centre-backs Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi in the pecking order.
Mangala partnered Kompany in the opening five games this season, helping City to win all five without conceding a goal, but the club then brought in Otamendi from Valencia for £28m and the Frenchman has started just 10 Premier League games since.
However, Mangala could have one last opportunity to rescue his City career with Kompany ruled out for at least a month with another calf strain.
He made his first start for more than two months on Sunday in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester United with Kompany and Otamendi both missing through injury.
Martin Demichelis, who also started the derby, endured a torrid time and Mangala could now partner Otamendi for the next month as City try to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League, while they also have a Champions League quarterfinal tie with Paris Saint-Germain in April.
Demichelis is also set to depart in the summer.
The 35-year-old Argentine signed a one-year contract extension in March 2015 but is not expected to be offered a new deal at the end of the season, and he told ESPN FC in December that he was open to a return to his homeland.
Guardiola, who will take charge at City when his Bayern Munich contract expires at the end of the season, is reported to be interested in bringing in Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte and Everton’s John Stones to bolster his defensive options.
Belgium international Jason Denayer could also return to the squad after a season-long loan at Turkish club Galatasaray. The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Celtic and won the Scottish Young Player of the Year award.
Guardiola will also have the option to promote from the youth team with Tosin Adarabioyo, 18, and Cameron Humphreys, 17, already making appearances for the first team.
