Italy CT Roberto Mancini has claimed ‘nobody wanted to coach the national team’ and his idea was to ‘create something special’ with the Azzurri.

After a successfully qualifying for Euro 2020 with a perfect 10 and was supposed to prepare for the upcoming competition during these weeks.

Mancini felt the Azzurri were in a good moment and would have been difficult to overcome this summer, but will have to hope that he can take advantage from having an even more experienced crop next year.

“In these two months we should have played two important friendlies against England at Wembley and against Germany in Nuremberg,” Mancini told Roma TV. “In these days, then, we should have been in a retreat for the European Championship.

“We missed everything that comes with our job and obviously the normality of everyday life. I think it would have been difficult for everyone to beat us and we would have played for it.

“I hope that this year our younger boys will accumulate more experience.”

Mancini, who in the same interview admitted that Roma starlet Nicolò Zaniolo will need to ‘find his role’, has revealed that he took the job to create something special with the Azzurri.

“My idea was to do something special to bring people closer to the national team and the lads have been very good at creating a great atmosphere.

“Italy has always had good players throughout history and that’s the case even today. Winning is never easy, even against weaker opponents and we wanted to do something different than before, trying to play well and do our best starting from these games.

“When I arrived, nobody wanted to coach the national team, they asked me, and I said yes. Many were afraid of jumping into a difficult situation, but football is also made of these moments and you just need to have a little confidence and believe in the qualities of younger players.”
