In a devastating incident, a 57-year-old Indonesian grandmother, Hapsah, was crushed to death by a 16-foot python that attempted to swallow her whole.
The tragic event occurred last week in Muaro Jambi, a province in Sumatra, while Hapsah was performing routine work tapping rubber trees on a plantation.
Reports indicate that Hapsah fought desperately as the massive snake wrapped itself around her body, but she was overpowered and rendered unconscious from lack of oxygen. Her husband, M Safri, who also worked on the plantation, became concerned when she didn’t return home in the afternoon. He began searching for her and discovered the snake still coiled around her neck.
Sungai Gelam Police Chief Iptu Usaha Sitepu confirmed that M Safri acted quickly, pulling on the snake’s tail and hitting it until it eventually loosened its deadly grip. Tragically, Hapsah had already succumbed to the attack.
The horrifying incident left the local community in shock. A mob of villagers formed, hunted down the python, and killed it in response. “It was massive. It was taken to the village to be shown to the community after it was killed,” said village head Amdi.
Hapsah’s body has been returned to her family and is being prepared for her funeral.
This marks the second fatal python attack in Indonesia this summer. Just days before Hapsah’s death, another elderly woman from Palopo City was killed by a serpent in the Sumarambu mountains.
