Further details of Harry Maguire’s arrest in Mykonos have emerged online.
The Manchester United defender was taken into custody along with two friends for allegedly being verbally abusive and violent to police officers following a dispute with other British tourists outside a bar in the early hours of Friday morning.
After the initial news from Greek news outlets broke this morning, Jamie Jackson from The Guardian has been on top of the story and provided new information in a series of tweets.
Quoting Petros Vassilakis, a police spokesman, it’s claimed that at least two policemen were “thrown down” after one of the men aimed a swing.
They are then said to have been punched and kicked, suffering facial injuries as a result. Maguire is alleged to have hit an officer before making an attempt to bribe them.
The three men were eventually detained and taken to the police station, where they were questioned and kept overnight.
England defender Maguire was transported from Mykonos to the neighbouring island of Syros in a boat and is slated to stand in front of the public prosecutor and face charges of aggravated assault.
However, fresh reports from the Daily Mail say the former Leicester City man will instead spend a second night in jail.
Footage posted to social media showed Maguire mingling with other tourists on his pre-season break this week, while he was also seen drinking at a pool party at SantAna Bar with teammates Marcus Rashford and Brandon Williams as well as brother Joe Maguire yesterday.
His partner Fern Hawkins posted a picture of the pair to Instagram on Thursday.
United, who are expected to assist Maguire with lawyers and legal advice along with the input from his own representatives, issued the following statement: “The club is aware of an alleged incident involving Harry Maguire in Mykonos last night.
“Contact has been made with Harry, and he is fully co-operating with the Greek authorities.
“At this time we will be making no further comment.”
Maguire has been United captain since January following the departure of Ashley Young to Inter Milan, with fans split as to whether he should be stripped of the captaincy following this incident.
