A lady has stirred heated conversations online after revealing unexpected financial advice from her 85-year-old grandmother.
The lady shared the story on X, formerly known as Twitter, where it quickly gained traction and divided opinions.
She explained that she and her husband had phoned her grandmother to share the good news of her new job. What began as a sweet family moment soon took an interesting turn.
In her post, the woman wrote: “My husband and I called my sweet, 85-year-old grandma to tell her I got a new job. She congratulated us, talked for a bit, and then hung up.
“Later she called me to say I should open a secret bank account and never tell my husband about it. My grandma is fierce.”
The advice, though brief, ignited a wider debate about trust, independence and financial security in marriage.

Many users believed the grandmother’s suggestion reflected the realities women of her generation faced.
Rymmes wrote: “For women of her era, financial independence wasn’t a given; it was often a hard-won luxury. To her, a “secret” account isn’t about lack of trust in your husband, it’s about “just-in-case” sovereignty.”
Lisha echoed similar thoughts, saying: “gave you generational survival advice 😌 Grandma didn’t just congratulate she shared the essence of life. This isn’t mistrust, it’s advice for independence. Women of the older generation knew why standing on your own feet is necessary.”
However, not everyone agreed with keeping finances hidden in marriage.
Shirley argued: “If your husband is good to you and financially responsible, better dispose that advice. Just because the advice came from an old woman doesn’t mean it is a wise advice or for you.”
Smith questioned the practical side of it, asking: “I’m curious; if you do take her advice and setup up the secret bank account… what do you plan on doing with the cash?”
Bumble-bee offered a balanced view: “When elders suggest secret accounts, it usually means they have seen love fail where paperwork didn’t. Respect the experience but build trust so you never need the secrecy. Power move is transparency with boundaries, not hidden wallets.”
