Natasha Akpoti’s lawyers raise concern over alleged bias following unaddressed petitions

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team has raised concerns over what it described as selective justice, following the Federal Government’s decision to file criminal charges against her while leaving multiple petitions she submitted earlier this year unaddressed.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 28, by her counsel, Uju Nwoduwu, the lawyers detailed at least 12 petitions filed by the senator between March and May 2025. The complaints include allegations of cyberstalking, defamation, threats to life, and an assassination attempt. Despite the gravity of these allegations, the legal team said there has been no response from the Nigeria Police Force or any relevant security agency.

“There is a legitimate public expectation that law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies uphold the principles of fairness, due process, and equal justice—regardless of who is involved,” the statement read.

The lawyers expressed particular concern that ‘’while Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petitions remain unattended, counter-allegations by individuals she accused—including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, have been acted upon swiftly, culminating in criminal charges against the senator.”

“This glaring disparity raises serious concerns about a biased and uneven application of justice,” they stated, adding that some of the petitions involve senior officials and incidents as serious as the attempted abduction and assassination of a protocol officer.

Although Akpoti-Uduaghan is currently abroad for personal reasons, her legal team confirmed that she has received formal communication regarding the charges and will make herself available for arraignment once a court date is scheduled.

“She remains resolute in her commitment to due process,” the statement said, while also thanking members of the public who have expressed concern over what the team described as “an extraordinarily questionable criminal charge.”
