Netflix’s ‘War Machine’ (2026) Review: Alan Ritchson vs. The Ultimate Weapon

If you mixed the survival tension of Predator with the mechanical terror of The Terminator, you would get Netflix’s latest global #1 hit: War Machine. Directed by Patrick Hughes (The Hitman’s Bodyguard), this film is a massive departure from the 2017 satirical movie of the same name.

In this 2026 iteration, the stakes aren’t political—they are primal.

The Plot: A Routine Drill Turned Nightmare

The story follows a group of elite U.S. Army Rangers undergoing the final 24 hours of the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP) in the rugged terrain of Victoria, Australia (standing in for a high-altitude training ground).

Alan Ritchson stars as Recruit 81, a stoic soldier haunted by the death of his brother. What begins as a simulated mission turns into a gruesome reality when the squad encounters a “threat beyond imagination”—a massive, high-tech killing machine that doesn’t belong to any known military.+1

Alan Ritchson’s Powerhouse Performance

Following his success in Reacher, Ritchson has solidified his spot as the modern “action king.” In War Machine, he brings a physical intensity that makes the “Man vs. Machine” conflict feel grounded.

Unlike the 2017 film where Brad Pitt played a caricature of a General, Ritchson’s Recruit 81 is a man of few words and total action. His performance is supported by a stellar cast, including:

  • Dennis Quaid as a grizzled commanding officer.
  • Stephan James and Jai Courtney as fellow recruits.
  • Esai Morales adding gravitas to the military leadership.

Why This Movie is Trending in 2026

Aside from the high-octane stunts, the film is sparking conversation because of its practical effects. Director Patrick Hughes opted for real locations and physical stunts over pure CGI, giving the action a “bone-crunching” weight that viewers can feel.

The “Machine” itself is a masterpiece of VFX and sound design—a relentless pursuer that uses heat signatures and advanced weaponry to pick off the recruits one by one.
