A Nigerian man who works as a DJ at an unnamed lounge has narrated how he was falsely labeled a cultist and jailed by the police after visiting a station to retrieve his seized laptop.
He shared this ordeal in a series of posts on a popular social media platform, X, formerly Twitter.
He explained that the lounge where he DJs was raided by the police, and during the commotion, his laptop was seized while he was in the restroom.
“When the Olosan Police Station raided the lounge I DJ at on Sunday, July 7, 2024, they cleared out all customers, and my laptop was taken during the process. I had just come out of the restroom when this happened.”
“Fast forward to Tuesday, July 9, the lounge manager and the owner’s wife went to the police station to claim the seized laptop.”
“The manager called me and said the police wanted to see me before releasing the laptop to them.”
“So, I went to meet them. As soon as I arrived at the station, the DPO ordered one of his officers to take me in and give my statement.”
“That’s when the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) accused me of being a cultist, claiming I was playing for cult members and that they found people smoking when they raided the lounge. He then handed me a sheet of paper to write down everything I knew.”
“I wrote down what happened, and shortly after, my lounge manager also came in. They finished taking our statements and detained both of us. We were held in a cell that Tuesday and couldn’t contact anyone, not even the lounge owner’s wife.”
“Moving to the next day, July 10, we were released, but the IPO handcuffed us and told us to sit behind the counter. After a while, he called us into his office, handcuffed us again, and put us in a police minivan parked at the station.”
“They started driving without telling us where they were taking us. Eventually, we arrived at the Magistrate Court in Ogba.”
“While we were handcuffed, we managed to quietly give our lounge owner’s number to a lawyer who was nearby.”
“We felt helpless; we had only gone to the police station to retrieve the laptop, but they treated us like criminals. Fortunately, the lawyer called our lounge owner, who arrived with another lawyer just before our case was heard.”
“The police had already fabricated false allegations against us. All their accusations were completely untrue.”
“The judge granted us bail, but our lounge owner couldn’t arrange bail that day. So, on July 10, 2024, we were taken to Kirikiri Prison.”
“We spent two days at Kirikiri Correctional Facility and were released on Friday, July 12, after our bail was sorted out. My laptop is still at the Olosan Police Station. I have always lived my life free of fights and crime; I have never broken the law before. It’s traumatizing that the police, who are supposed to protect us, lied about me.”
