A Nigerian nurse has sparked conversations online after sharing a detailed breakdown of what expectant parents should budget for when delivering a baby in Lagos State, especially on the Island.
According to her, antenatal care now starts from about ₦450,000 and above. A normal vaginal delivery goes for roughly ₦800,000 and above, while an elective caesarean section ranges between ₦1.5m and ₦1.8m. Emergency CS, she said, can cost ₦2m or more.
She added that extra procedures quickly increase the bill. Phototherapy for jaundice costs between ₦25,000 and ₦50,000 per day. Blood transfusion is not included in delivery fees and can cost ₦60,000 to ₦100,000 depending on blood group. For rhesus-negative mothers, the Rogam injection now goes for about ₦110,000.
Intensive care unit admission, for either mother or baby, requires deposits ranging from ₦1.5m to ₦3m, excluding daily charges. Circumcision costs ₦40,000 and above, while ear piercing ranges from ₦20,000 to ₦30,000.
She also mentioned that procedures like evacuation after complications can cost ₦300,000 and above, cervical cerclage starts from ₦400,000, and family planning after delivery is ₦50,000 and above, depending on the method.
The nurse stressed that hospitals require deposits before procedures and warned that insurance does not cover everything.
