NiMet forecasts nationwide rain and flash floods from Monday to Wednesday



The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast rainy and thundery weather conditions across the country from Monday through Wednesday, warning of potential flash floods in several states.

In its weather outlook released in Abuja, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall on Monday, 28 July across parts of Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina States in the northern region. The rest of the region is expected to experience sunny conditions with patches of cloud.

By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms and moderate rains are expected over Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, Katsina, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States. The agency warned of possible flash floods in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano States during this period.

In the central region, cloudy skies are expected in the morning, with light to moderate rainfall likely in parts of Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa. Rainfall is forecast to continue into the afternoon and evening in Plateau, Nasarawa, FCT, Kogi, Benue, and Niger States, with a high risk of flash flooding particularly in Plateau State.

For the southern region, cloudy skies are expected in the morning, followed by light to moderate rainfall later in the day in Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.

On Tuesday, sunny skies with scattered clouds are forecast over the northern region in the morning. However, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are anticipated in Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, and Kano States.

Later in the day, rain and thunderstorms are expected over Adamawa, Taraba, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, and Kebbi States.

In the central region, light to moderate rain is forecast in the morning across Niger, Benue, FCT, Kogi, Plateau, and Nasarawa, with continued rainfall later in Plateau, Niger, FCT, Kwara, Kogi, and Nasarawa.

The southern region will see cloudy skies in the morning, with chances of rain in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States. Moderate rainfall is expected later in Abia, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa States.

By Wednesday, the northern region is expected to have sunny skies with cloudy patches. Morning thunderstorms and moderate rain are forecast in Kaduna, Kebbi, Taraba, Sokoto, Zamfara, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina States, with continued rainfall later in Borno, Jigawa, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Zamfara, and Kebbi.

In the central region, cloudy skies with chances of morning thunderstorms are expected in Plateau, Niger, FCT, and Nasarawa, followed by moderate rain later in FCT, Plateau, Niger, Benue, and Nasarawa.

Southern states such as Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River may see morning rainfall, while the afternoon and evening may bring moderate to heavy rains across Ebonyi, Abia, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

NiMet advised states at risk of flash floods to activate emergency response systems. It urged the public to avoid driving during heavy rains, dress appropriately against cold nighttime temperatures, and take precautions against strong winds that may precede thunderstorms.

“Fasten loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and avoid taking shelter under tall trees,” the agency warned.

Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet offices to aid flight planning. Residents are encouraged to stay updated through regular weather forecasts on the agency’s official website: www.nimet.gov.ng.
