NYSC Backs Kwara Gov’t Over Demotion Of Teacher Who Brutalised Corps Member

Nigerian Scheme NYSC Backs Kwara Gov’t Over Demotion Of School Teacher Who Brutalised Corps Member

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has backed the decision of the Kwara State government to demote a school teacher at the Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin who brutalised and assaulted a female corps member.

Recall that the Kwara State government earlier sanctioned a school teacher, Hamzat Fatimoh Nike for beating the serving corps member posted to her place of work.

According to a source who was privy to the situation, the incident occurred when the female corps member visited the school last week to collect her clearance letter.

SaharaReporters had learnt that one of the teachers had accused her of “not greeting properly.”

“A teacher said she did not greet well and that was how it all started. The teacher beat her and tore her clothes,” the source said.

A press statement issued by Sam Bola Onile, Press Secretary, Kwara TESCOM, had stated that an investigation into the incident revealed that the school teacher was guilty of unprofessional conduct.

Meanwhile, Caroline Embu, the NYSC Acting Director, Information and Public Relations, in her press statement released on Thursday, praised the state government for its objectivity in resolving the issue.

The statement said: “The Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General YD Ahmed has applauded the Kwara State Government over its sanctions on a school teacher, Hajia Fatimoh Nike Hamzat, who recently assaulted a female Corps Member, serving at Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, the State Capital.

“Brigadier General Ahmed commended the investigative panel set up by the State Government for its objectivity and fairness in line with the Public Service Rules.

“He said the Scheme would not condone any form of maltreatment meted out on its Corps Members. He pointed out that as people who are on National Assignment, and contributing to nation-building and unity of Nigeria, Corps Members deserve to be valued, appreciated, and accorded decent treatment by their employers and members of their host communities.

“General Ahmed stated further that the security and welfare of Corps Members remains the topmost priority of his administration.

“He, however urged all Corps Members to abide by their Oath of Allegiance and continue to discharge their statutory responsibilities towards national unity and socio-economic development of the country as good ambassadors of the Scheme.

“The Corps Member in question had been verbally and physically assaulted by Hajia Fatimoh Nike Hamzat for failing to ‘greet her properly’.

“The law-abiding but aggrieved Corps Member then reported the incident, and NYSC forwarded the same complaint to the State Government through the appropriate channels leading to the setting up of an investigative panel, the findings which the NYSC found fair and commendable.”
