Nollywood actress and director, Omoni Oboli reveals why she refrains from intervening in her son’s marriage and respecting her daughter-in-law’s independence even if she has concerns.
During her recent appearance on the Dear Ife podcast with Ifedayo Agoro, the mother of three explained her approach to respecting her son and daughter-in-law.
Oboli revealed that she empathizes with her daughter-in-law by placing herself in her shoes instead of solely relying on her perspective.
Drawing from her own experiences, she noted that she, too, got married at 21—the same age her daughter-in-law married her son—and was quite strong-headed. Acknowledging her youthful defiance, Oboli understands that her daughter-in-law would likely prefer not to be controlled.
The seasoned actress also emphasized the importance of sons being able to communicate openly with their mothers on behalf of their wives, reinforcing healthy family boundaries and mutual respect.
“There’s been a few times when my son has come to meet me to say, ‘Mum, Marelle does not like that’ and I have to catch myself back and say ‘Oh, I didn’t mean it that way.’ And it’s okay. So, the fact that your child cannot come to you to say ‘my wife doesn’t like this’, that’s a problem in itself,” she stated.
“I think, first things first, people need to understand and realise that this is now another family. Yes, they are still a part of your family but they now have their own family,” she opined.
