Muyiwa Awoniyi, the manager of Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Tems, has shed light on the alarming revenue gap faced by Nigerian artists on music streaming platforms, especially when compared to artists in developed countries.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Awoniyi explained how the location of music streams significantly impacts the financial return for artists.
According to him, Nigerian musicians earn drastically less per stream compared to their international counterparts.
“Do you know how much a million streams is worth out of Nigeria? It’s $300. Your one million streams [in Sweden] is between $8,000 and $10,000,” Awoniyi stated.
He attributed this disparity to factors such as the low cost of music streaming subscriptions in Nigeria, around N900 monthly on Spotify, and the broader impact of a struggling economy on purchasing power.
“A lot of people do not know this. Spotify treats things territorially. So if my IP is anchored to a region where one million streams is $300, I am cooked,” he added.
