PDP seeks Peter Obi’s return ahead of 2027, calls him ‘a great political capital’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed strong interest in bringing back former presidential candidate Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing him as a significant political asset.

Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, made the party’s position known during an interview on Arise News on Thursday, July 17, 2025. He noted that the PDP is actively exploring avenues to woo Obi back, acknowledging the formidable impact he had during the 2023 presidential election.

“Peter Obi is our product, and the PDP indeed wants to get him back. He is a very great capital for any political party, and any political party that will have him will be to their advantage,” Abdullahi stated.

Abdullahi conceded that the PDP underestimated Obi’s political strength during the 2023 contest.

“The truth of the matter is, if he had not gone the way he did… and still generated over six million votes in spite of the rigging and frustration, Peter Obi is truly a political capital, no doubt about it,” he added.

Although Obi has publicly affirmed his commitment to the Labour Party, he has also signaled interest in building a broader opposition front through a new coalition spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a related development, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who led the PDP’s last two presidential campaigns, formally exited the PDP to join the same ADC-led coalition, adding another twist to the evolving political landscape ahead of 2027.

It is noteworthy that Obi, a former Anambra State Governor and former PDP vice presidential candidate, exited the party in the lead-up to the 2023 elections to pursue his presidential bid under the Labour Party (LP).

His campaign gained massive momentum, winning twelve states, including the Federal Capital Territory and securing over six million votes, finishing third behind PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and President Bola Tinubu of the APC.
