Peter Obi’s birthday rally banned in Kaduna over security, political tensions

The Kaduna State Police Command has issued a strong advisory warning supporters of former presidential candidate Peter Obi to suspend a planned political rally in honour of his birthday, citing credible intelligence of potential security threats.

In a statement released on Friday and signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the police said they had received reports indicating that criminal elements might exploit the planned gathering to incite violence and disrupt public peace.

While acknowledging the supporters’ right to association, the police emphasised that all political rallies and public political gatherings in the state remain suspended until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially lifts the restriction ahead of the 2027 elections.

“The Command strongly advises the organisers of the planned Peter Obi rally to suspend any gathering or procession. If they wish to honour their principal, such activities should be conducted in a safe and non-disruptive manner,” the statement read.

Adding to the concern, the police noted that several political parties in Kaduna are expected to hold their internal primaries on the same day as the proposed rally. These parties had duly notified security agencies in accordance with the law, unlike the unapproved Peter Obi event.

Authorities fear that the overlap could heighten tensions and potentially trigger confrontations across parts of the state.

The police reiterated their readiness to maintain peace and enforce the law, warning that legal action would be taken against anyone or any group that defies the directive.

The Command urged residents to remain law-abiding and cooperative, assuring the public that efforts are ongoing to ensure a secure environment for all legitimate political activities once INEC gives the green light.
