Premier League matches could reportedly return as a ‘TV event’ in June or July following the coronavirus crisis.
Most clubs have nine games of the domestic season remaining and with the season indefinitely suspended, clubs are desperate to finish the season with revenue from broadcasting deals at stake.
As a result, a source in contact with Premier League chairmen believes when football returns, it’ll be played solely as an event for TV and multiple games a day could be played at the national stadium.
‘By June or July they will be playing games solely as TV events,’ the source told The Times.
‘If they have to play four games a day at Wembley to get it done, they will do that.’
As of yet, no return date has been set in stone by the Premier League, as the UK remains in a state of lockdown.
Many clubs are looking to agree wage cuts with their players in order to lessen the effect of the COVID-19 outbreak.
However, despite talks for weeks between clubs and their first-team stars, only West Ham and Southampton have so far agreed salary slices.
With regards to games being played at Wembley, the home of English football has recently hosted top-flight matches.
Tottenham played their home games in the 2017-18 and most of the 2018-19 season at Wembley, as they waited for their new stadium to be built.
Wembley also hosts England internationals, and was due to hold the semi-finals and final of the European Championships this summer, before it was delayed to 2021 by UEFA.
