Tragedy struck in Rivers State on Friday, September 8, as suspected cultists carried out a heinous attack that claimed the life of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ahoada Division, SP Bako Angbashim. The incident, which unfolded in a harrowing manner, has sent shockwaves throughout the region.

The fatal confrontation occurred when SP Bako Angbashim and his team found themselves in a fierce gun battle with a notorious local cult leader known as “2baba.” The intense firefight led to a dire situation as the police unit reportedly ran out of ammunition during the engagement. Faced with this critical shortage and lacking reinforcements, the officers had no choice but to make a tactical retreat.

Tragically, during their retreat, SP Bako Angbashim, who had sustained bullet wounds during the exchange, was captured by the ruthless cultists. In addition to the DPO, a police informant was injured during the conflict and is currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed location.

In a chilling and gruesome video believed to have been released by the cultists, the dismembered remains of SP Bako Angbashim could be seen, accompanied by a voice taunting the fallen officer. The disturbing footage has added to the shock and outrage surrounding the incident.

SP Bako Angbashim had previously served in the Khana Local Government Area of Ogoni, where he had gained popularity for his distinctive habit of attending events barefoot.

Confirming the tragic incident, Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, issued a statement expressing the determination of law enforcement to bring the culprits to justice. The statement outlined the events leading to the DPO’s death, emphasizing SP Bako Angbashim’s unwavering courage and dedication during the mission to combat criminal activities in the Odumude Area of Ahoada East Local Government Area in Rivers State.

The statement by the Rivers State Police Command read:

“Rivers killing: We will not rest until justice is served… In an unfortunate incident on 8th of September, 2023, the DPO of Ahoada Division, SP Bako Angbashim, displayed exemplary courage during a mission to combat criminal activities in the Odumude Area of Ahoada East Local Government Area in Rivers State.”

It continued to detail the ambush faced by SP Bako Angbashim and his team, the fatal injuries he sustained, and the challenges faced during the subsequent rescue operation.

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Nwonyi Polycarp Emeka, PhD, expressed a deep determination to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to justice. An extensive investigation is currently underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. The statement concluded by extending heartfelt condolences to SP Bako Angbashim’s family and all those affected by the distressing incident.
