Premier League Review: Manchester United Retain Top Spot As City Leap Up

The 2020/21 Premier League season recorded its 18th match day over the weekend and there were a few interesting results that have affected the table. Champions Liverpool have dropped from second to fourth, while former champions Manchester City moved from fifth to second.

We bring you a review of last weekend’s round of matches and how they impacted on the table.

The title race

Manchester United stayed top for another week after they held Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield on Sunday. This is the first time the Red Devils have stayed top of the league at the turn of the year since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013 and with a trip to struggling Fulham on Wednesday, they could maintain their hold on the top with a win.

However, Manchester City could go top – even if temporarily – when they face Aston Villa in their outstanding game also on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Leicester City’s defeat of Southampton meant they moved to third, with Liverpool dropping to fourth.

The top 4 race

While Manchester United, Manchester City, Leicester and Liverpool occupy the top four places after last weekend’s round of games, Tottenham and Everton in fifth and sixth are not far off with one and two points respectively separating them from Liverpool in fourth. Chelsea are sixth, but are four points adrift of fourth place.

The relegation battlers

Sheffield United already look doomed for the drop and it’s only January. Meanwhile, Fulham appears to have picked up a bit of form of late, but it hasn’t seen them step away from the drop zone with a 0-1 defeat to Chelsea meaning they remain 18th. West Brom have also seen an improvement in form since the arrival of Sam Allardyce but are still stuck on 19th, despite winning 3-2 at Wolves.

Slightly above them are Burnley, Brighton and Newcastle, all within touching distance of the drop.
