President Tinubu orders political appointees seeking elective position in 2027 to resign

President Bola Tinubu has ordered political appointees in his administration with ambitions for the 2027 elections to step down before the end of March 2026.

The directive affects ministers, aides, and heads of government agencies who plan to contest elective positions, signalling the government’s push for a fair electoral process.

Deadline Set for Aspirants

According to a statement from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, all affected officials must resign on or before March 31, 2026.

The circular, issued under the authority of the SGF, George Akume, explained that the decision aligns with the Electoral Act and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Officials Affected by the Order

The resignation order covers a wide range of political appointees. These include ministers, ministers of state, and presidential aides at different levels.

It also extends to chief executives and directors-general of federal agencies, commissions, and government-owned companies intending to participate in party primaries.

Push for Transparency

The presidency said the move is designed to ensure strict compliance with electoral laws and prevent the misuse of public office for political gain.

Officials affected by the directive are expected to submit their resignation letters through the SGF’s office before the deadline.
