The House of Representatives has instructed the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command to suspend the enforcement of the tinted glass ban in Abuja.
According to reports, the House called for a 90-day grace period, during which citizens in the capital city should be adequately informed about the regulation.
It also directed the Police Command to release impounded vehicles and cease the harassment of motorists.
This resolution was made following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance put forward by Mukhtar Tolani Shagaya.
The House further directed the “Committee on Police Affairs to engage with the Nigeria Police Force leadership to establish clear enforcement guidelines for such directives in the future”.
It also called on the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to launch a “public enlightenment campaign, informing citizens about the regulations and the process for obtaining the necessary permits or making required modifications to their vehicles“.
According to The Nation, Shagaya informed the House that the recent directive by the FCT Police Command to ban vehicles with tinted glasses and covered number plates was introduced to combat rising criminal activities, including kidnapping.
However, he pointed out that the enforcement of the ban has been overshadowed by incidents of harassment targeting motorists and residents in the capital city.
Shagaya also highlighted that inadequate public awareness and insufficient time for vehicle owners to comply with the new regulations have led to numerous vehicles being impounded, causing significant hardship for families and businesses.
