Rivers police command arrest officers who allegedly assaulted man who refused to give them N1m bribe over his expired tinted glass permit

The Rivers state police command have arrested police officers attached to its anti-kidnapping unit who allegedly assaulted a man identified as Cletus Emmanuel Onyekachi.

In a video making the rounds on social media, Onyekachi said himself and his brother had gone to wash his car and were returning home when they met the officers along Igbo Ichie road conducting a stop and search.

Onyekachi said the officers asked for his papers which he provided. He said when one of the officers checked through his papers, he mentioned that his tinted glass permit expired on August 12, some days ago. He said the officers asked him if he was aware and he said Yes he is aware and that he was going to renew it as soon as possible. He mentioned that he told the officer that he would have done it since but the portal for renewal is crowded at the moment. 

Onyekachi said the officer then asked him to reverse his car so they can drive to the police station. He said he then jokingly told the officer that the offense is not that serious for them to go to the station. He said things took a different turn when the officer asked him to give them N1 million so as to let him go but he turned it down saying he only had N20, 000 to give to them. He said the officers got mad when they saw him holding his phone and intending to make a phone call. He said the officers assaulted him, his brother, his friend and the young lady in his car.

Reacting to his viral video, the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the erring officers have been arrested and detained.
