Barcelona’s failure to bring Cristian Romero to the club in part thwarted their plans to get Lionel Messi to renew at Camp Nou, claims Marca.

The Argentine has sensationally brought the curtain down on his time at the club, with league financial restrictions thought to play a major part in the call.

But reports suggest a failure to beat out Tottenham for international team-mate Romero also played a part in the breakdown of a deal.
