Senator Ned Nwoko reacts to apology video of tiktoker; says incident proves why Nigeria urgently needs a social media regulation bill

Senator Ned Nwoko has finally responded to the viral apology video made by the young man who accused him of plotting to harm his wife, Nollywood star Regina Daniels.

In a statement shared online, the Delta North senator said the incident is proof that Nigeria’s social media space has become “one of the most unregulated in the world,” with people freely making damaging allegations just to chase views.

According to him, this behaviour continues because many offenders believe they can stir public emotions, evade consequences, and later return with an apology when things escalate.

Nwoko wrote:’

“The accompanying video trended a couple of days ago. It is testament to the fact that Nigerian social media space has become one of the most unregulated in the world. Laying very serious allegations has become a common trait to attract millions of views without recourse to the damaging effects on the people involved.”

He added that the situation “clearly justifies the urgent need for the social media bill” currently in the National Assembly.

“You can’t lie to make money and turn around to apologize after criminally defaming and hurting people,” he said, stressing that social media companies must be held accountable for the content they allow.

The senator argued that if Nigerian landlords can face penalties for actions of tenants who commit cybercrimes, foreign tech platforms should also bear responsibility for defamatory posts published on their platforms.

He went on to call for social media companies to be mandated to register and open offices in Nigeria, stating that this will create jobs, ensure technology transfer, improve tax payments, make litigation easier, and help security agencies track criminal activities.

“It’s Senator Ned today, who knows who is next?” he added, urging Nigerians to support his bill aimed at enforcing proper regulation.
