An X user has shared a touching and painful story about their aunt and uncle, who officially divorced after 57 years of marriage.

According to the post, the couple is still very much in love, but the divorce was a legal decision forced by the cost of medical care in the United States.

The user explained that the uncle’s medical bills had climbed to about $277,000. By divorcing, the aunt would not be left with the debt when he eventually passes. The house is now legally in her name, and she is financially protected.

“I’m so sad that decades of marriage comes to an end because of the American medical system,” the user wrote.
