Atletico Madrid stunned the footballing world when they defeated Liverpool to knock the defending European champions out of the 2019/20 Champions League, and as such 2020 could prove to be Jan Oblak’s year.

The widely accepted view is that Oblak is the best goalkeeper in the world, performing to an outstanding standard for a number of years.

However, despite dominating the Zamora Trophy, the Slovenian international has been widely overlooked for both FIFA’s The Best award and the Ballon d’Or.

Unfortunately for Oblak, the team successes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Barcelona have led to Alisson Becker, Ederson and Marc-Andre ter Stegen all being recognised in these shortlists.

Despite his individual brilliance, since arriving in the Spanish capital the former Benfica goalkeeper has won only a Supercopa de Espana, a Europa League and a UEFA Super Cup.

This isn’t the collection of trophies that his performances warrant, but it explains why he isn’t considered for the biggest individual awards in world football.

“I hope that things will change this season and that I win with Atletico, and that as a consequence I will also enter the shortlist for awards,” Oblak has explained.

Los Rojiblancos’ progression into the quarter-final of the Champions League is key to this endeavour, especially with the team sitting outside of the top four in LaLiga Santander.

Knocking out the best team in Europe signalled to the rest of the continent that Atleti are still contenders in Europe, despite their domestic problems, and there is every chance the team could make another run to the final if the European season resumes.

At Anfield Oblak made eight key saves, creating the conditions for Marcos Llorente and Alvaro Morata to emerge as the heroes.

His performance certainly went noticed and it’s still one of the most recent displays most football fans have watched, coming just before the coronavirus pause.
