Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has strongly refuted the claims circulating on social media suggesting that President Bola Tinubu is indifferent to the difficulties and hardships experienced by Nigerians.
In response to these allegations, Onanuga emphasized the President’s commitment to addressing the pressing issues facing the nation and highlighted ongoing efforts aimed at improving the lives of citizens.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics on October 27, 2024, Onanuga dismissed the moniker “T-Pain” given to Tinubu, saying it was a “mischievous” nickname and a misrepresentation of the President’s intentions.
According to Onanuga, the President is deeply aware of the struggles faced by citizens and has pledged that relief is on the horizon. “The President feels the pain of Nigerians and is working tirelessly to ensure better days are coming sooner rather than later,” Onanuga stated. He emphasized that Tinubu’s administration is focused on “repairing the economy,” not causing additional suffering.
Responding to questions about the “T-Pain” label trending on social media, Onanuga clarified that Tinubu is not involved in monitoring social media comments. “The President does not read what is on social media. People calling him that are just being mischievous,” he remarked, stressing that this narrative was not a reflection of Tinubu’s commitment to national development.
Onanuga acknowledged the economic difficulties, noting that the government is acutely aware of rising inflation and the pressures of soaring food and energy prices. “Despite the challenges, we are experiencing economic growth, and revenues have increased,” he pointed out, citing the administration’s efforts to stabilize the economy.
The spokesperson reiterated the administration’s stance on the controversial policies of petrol subsidy removal and the unification of forex rates. He said that while these measures have led to public discontent and rising living costs, they are crucial for the nation’s long-term economic health. Citizens have held two major protests urging the government to reconsider these reforms, but Onanuga stated that the administration remains firm in its belief that these changes are necessary.
He called for patience and understanding, urging Nigerians to trust that the President’s policies would eventually lead to a more prosperous and stable nation. “President Tinubu is not here to inflict pain, but to create a better future for all,” Onanuga concluded.
