Traders in Ajegunle are delighted after the Lagos state government decided to reopen Alayabiagba market, which had been closed earlier in the week due to environmental concerns.
The announcement of the reopening was made by the Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, who shared a video capturing the traders’ reactions on his social media account. He mentioned that the market had been reopened after it complied with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Law. The commissioner emphasized the importance of keeping market environments clean to avoid sanctions.
Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab has been taking a strong stance against uncleanliness in Lagos markets and has closed down several markets in the state this week. Just recently, he announced the closure of Ladipo market for similar reasons.
Through his social media handle, he explained that Ladipo market had been “sealed off due to various environmental violations, including improper waste disposal, unhygienic conditions, and failure to pay waste disposal fees, among other infractions.”
He stated that the market would remain closed until traders and market stakeholders met the required conditions for rectification, as part of the ongoing efforts to ensure compliance in markets across the state.
