A Nigerian Uber driver has alleged that police officers stopped his car, extorted ₦150,000 from his passenger who was heading to the airport, and even offered him a share of the money.
The driver shared his experience on X, formerly Twitter, stating that he was transporting a passenger to the airport in Maryland when they were intercepted by officers.
According to him, the police took the passenger’s phone and negotiated the payment before extorting ₦150,000.
After the transaction, the officers reportedly asked for his account details to send him a share, but he refused.
Recounting the incident, he wrote:
“I’m an Uber driver. On our way to the airport in Maryland, we were stopped by the police. They asked my passenger to step out, took his phone, and negotiated with him. One of the officers later approached me and asked for my account number. I was shocked and told him I wasn’t interested.”
“Their boss even called to tell me that they always ‘appreciate’ drivers who bring them big fish. The passenger ended up giving them ₦150,000 and still missed his flight.”
