Lagos, Nigeria – February 19, 2026
In a dramatic turn of events that has captivated Nigerian social media, popular activist and content creator Martins Vincent Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), released a recorded phone conversation with TikToker Mirabel Onyegwu, where she allegedly confessed to fabricating a rape allegation. The incident, which initially sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice, has now led to Mirabel’s arrest by the Ogun State Police for providing false information.
Mirabel Onyegwu first gained attention earlier this month when she posted videos on TikTok claiming she had been raped by an unknown assailant in her apartment. She described being attacked with a blade, showed alleged injuries, and shared threatening messages purportedly from the rapist. The story quickly went viral, prompting public sympathy, donations, and demands for police action. Influencers, including VDM, initially supported her call for justice, with many Nigerians expressing concern over women’s safety.
However, inconsistencies in her account raised suspicions. Police investigations revealed no supporting evidence from phone records or medical examinations, and Mirabel reportedly refused a full forensic check. Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer Oluseyi Babaseyi stated that the case was of “national importance” and warned of severe consequences if the claims proved false.
On February 19, VDM shared a nearly 20-minute audio and video recording of a WhatsApp call with Mirabel. In the conversation, Mirabel admitted that the rape story was untrue, confessing she created a secondary account to send the threatening messages to herself. She attributed the fabrication to a panic attack and influence from a friend, while also revealing personal struggles including self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and a history of cutting herself. Mirabel tearfully begged VDM for help, stating, “The story about a stranger r@ping me is not true… I have p@nic att@ck.”
VDM, known for his no-nonsense approach to social issues, emphasized the need for Mirabel to seek professional help, noting, “From this revelation, I hope everyone understands how deep this is… She needs help.” The video also displayed chat screenshots where Mirabel discussed her self-inflicted injuries and mental health issues.
Following the confession, Ogun State Police arrested Mirabel on charges of wasting police resources, perverting justice, and spreading false information. Her TikTok account has since been set to private, with several videos deleted. Donors who contributed to her cause are now demanding refunds, highlighting the financial implications of the hoax.
Public reaction has been mixed. Many expressed outrage over the false claim, with comments like “Fear women” and calls for punishment to deter similar incidents. Others, however, urged compassion, pointing to Mirabel’s admitted mental health struggles as a cry for help. VDM’s supporters praised his investigative role, while critics questioned whether the public shaming exacerbates her issues.
This case underscores the challenges of verifying stories in the era of social media virality. While genuine victims often face skepticism, false allegations can undermine trust in real cases. Some speculate the story might have been a ploy for attention or content creation, as VDM noted in an earlier post.
The Ogun Police have promised a thorough resolution, but the incident has sparked debates on mental health support, online accountability, and the ethics of public exposés. As one user commented, “This escalation might be diverting masses from real issues.”
Mirabel’s full response remains limited, with no public statements from her X account. The story continues to unfold, with calls for balanced reporting to avoid stigmatizing mental health or genuine survivors.
