“We won’t pay dowry if she’s not….” – Woman sets strict marriage rules for brothers, sparks reactions

A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread reactions online after declaring that her brothers would not marry any woman who is not a virgin.

In a viral video on X (formerly Twitter), the woman revealed that she had already advised her cousin brothers — who are now of marriageable age — on the type of women they should consider for marriage.

According to her, men are encouraging certain behaviours by still paying bride price and marrying women with what she described as “high body counts.”

In her words, she said:

“I have told my cousin brothers, if she’s not a virgin, we will not pay bride price. We will follow you for the engagement, we will do the marriage process, but that bride price, we no go give shishi,.

She also criticised the lifestyle of some young women on TikTok and other social media platforms, arguing that men contribute to it by still choosing to marry them.

She claimed that if men collectively refused to settle down with women whose past they disapproved of, it would force a shift in behaviour and values among young women.

“The more you men continue to wife them and privatise them, they won’t see anything wrong with what they are doing,” she added.

Her comments have since triggered heated debate across social media platforms.

One user wrote, “Double standards everywhere. Everyone has preferences, sha.” Another added, “Marriage is more than someone’s past.”
