Why Liverpool Could Wait Longer Before Lifting Premier League Trophy

Liverpool could have to wait an extra few days to get their hands on the Premier League trophy should the division’s traditions be followed.

The Reds secured a first top-flight title in 30 years when second-placed Manchester City lost at Chelsea last Thursday, bringing the wait for a 19th league success – and a first in the Premier League era – to an end.

Jurgen Klopp’s men had already looked certain to secure the title before the season was halted by the coronavirus crisis, with the Reds spending the break a huge 25 points clear of City at the top.

Their victory with seven matches of the season remaining is the earliest in Premier League history, but also the latest in terms of the date, June 25, because of the season stalling.

It is usually Premier League tradition for the team that wins the league to be presented with the trophy in their final home match of the season, even though campaign has had to be concluded behind closed doors and with no fans.

Liverpool’s last Anfield game of the campaign is against Chelsea, but the Blues’ progress to the semi-finals of the FA Cup means it will have to be moved from the original date on the weekend of July 18.

It was announced on Wednesday that Frank Lampard’s men will face Manchester United at Wembley on July 19, with the match kicking off at 6pm and screened on BBC One.

With the fixtures stacked up on weekends and midweeks before then that means the most likely date that Liverpool will face Chelsea at Anfield will be Wednesday, July 22, when they could finally get their hands on the trophy.

However in certain circumstances – and the 2019/20 season has been full of exceptional ones – winning clubs have picked up the trophy before their final home league game.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola lifted the 2017/18 title after a goalless draw at home to Huddersfield, and before a home game against Brighton.

Manchester City lifted the crown after a goalless draw with Huddersfield in May 2018, three days before their final home league game of the season against Brighton.

This is likely because of the fact that any trophy presentation after an evening game would have gone on long into the night, although with no fans in the stadium then this would be less of an issue for Liverpool at Anfield.

The Reds face Aston Villa on Sunday, July 5 and Burnley on Saturday, July 11 in their other two remaining home matches.
