The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has imposed a controversial ban on mobile phones for staff of the Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS) and the Department of Land Administration.
According to the report obtained by Sahara Reporters, the directive bars officers on Salary Grade Level 14 and below from bringing mobile phones into office premises, effective Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
In the memo issued by AGIS Head, Chijioke Nwankwoeze, the decision was described as a measure aimed at “maintaining discipline and information security” within the agency.
“There shall be a ban on the use of mobile phones within the office premises for all officers on Salary Grade Level (SGL) 14 and below. Affected staff are not permitted to enter the premises with their mobile phones henceforth,” the memo stated.
This comes shortly after the circulating videos showing Minister Wike in a heated confrontation with a naval officer over a disputed property in Abuja went viral on social media.
A senior AGIS staff member told Sahara Reporter that the minister was infuriated by how widely the video circulated within 24hours, calling the ban “his way of showing anger.”
The confrontation, which occurred at Gaduwa District, drew nationwide attention after Wike accused the naval officer of illegally guarding a construction site allegedly linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff.
Civil servants, however, have condemned the policy as impractical and counterproductive, arguing that mobile phones are vital for official communication.
