Woman narrates how her 4-year-old son died after househelp threw him into well and fled

A Kenyan mother has painfully narrated how her 4-year-old son died after her househelp threw him into a well within the homestead and fled the scene.

Speaking with a TV station, Mercy Ogechi, from Gisembe village, Ichuni, in Nyaribari Masaba, Kisii county, tearfully recounted the moment she learned of her son’s death, vividly sharing the moment she discovered his lifeless body.

She explained that she received a call from a strange number urging her to rush home and attend to her injured child.

Tearfully, she revealed that the caller did not disclose the nature of the incident, only insisting that her son needed her.

At that moment, she could not fathom that her son might be dead.

She immediately called the househelp to inquire about what had happened.

“The caller hung up. I called back immediately to ask who was calling, but they wouldn’t reveal their name. They just insisted I should rush home to help my child because no one was there to assist him. I called my househelp straight away, but she didn’t pick up. I kept calling, but she didn’t answer any of my calls,” the heartbroken mother explained through tears.

Filled with worry and dread, the devastated woman left work and hurried back home.

She recalled searching all possible places within the house where her son could have been, but found nothing.

“I went outside the house and saw that the well was open. I looked inside and saw my child floating face down in the water. At first, I thought it was his clothes that had fallen into the well, but when I looked closely, I saw his head, and his shoes were floating separately. That’s when I screamed for help,” she shared, her voice trembling with anguish.

The grieving mother shared that she had never wronged the househelp in any way and always ensured her salary was paid on time.

Ogechi revealed that she had given the woman the freedom to take Saturdays off for her personal life and had never denied her anything.

This made her question, with a heart full of sorrow and confusion, why the woman would harm her beloved son.

Steve Ogechi, the boy’s father, said he arrived home to find a crowd of people gathered around the well.

He went to check, and there he saw his son, floating in the water.

“I asked the people standing around why they hadn’t helped the child. They told me he was d3ad, that’s why he was floating in the water,” he said, his voice heavy with grief.

Dorcah Nyaboke, a village elder, urged residents to carry out thorough background checks before hiring househelps.

She also suggested introducing the househelp to neighbours so they can be vigilant and ensure the safety of the children in their care.
