Truphena Muthoni, a 21-year-old environmental conservationist, has made history by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest tree hug. She achieved this remarkable feat at Michuki Park in Nairobi on Saturday, February 1, 2025.
Her accomplishment has been widely celebrated, including by Ababu Namwamba, the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). He commended Muthoni for her resilience, not only in breaking the record but also in her dedication to environmental conservation.
In a statement on his X page, Namwamba expressed his admiration for Muthoni’s achievement, emphasizing its global significance. He highlighted how her record-breaking effort showcases the power of young people in championing climate action, sustainability, and the use of nature for mental health and wellness.
Namwamba, who previously served as Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Sports, further stated that Muthoni’s success would inspire more youth, particularly from Generation Z, to engage in environmental conservation. He encouraged young Kenyans to follow her example by advocating for climate change awareness, tree planting, and mental health initiatives.
Muthoni’s historic achievement has drawn comparisons to the late Wangari Maathai, Kenya’s renowned environmental activist. Her actions serve as a powerful reminder of the role individuals can play in making the planet healthier and more sustainable for future generations.
