AFCON ref also officiated ‘farcical’ World Cup tie and faced corruption allegation

Tunisia vs Mali ended in chaos on Wednesday afternoon after referee Janny Sikazwe blew up for full-time on two separate occasions, both of which were before 90 minutes into the Africa Cup of Nations clash.

Referee Janny Sikazwe has form for taking charge of controversial football matches.

The Zambian official was in charge of Tunisia’s clash with Mali on Wednesday afternoon in the Africa Cup of Nations.

And the game will go down in history after Sikazwe blew for full-time on two different occasions, once in the 85th minute and once in the 89th minute.

Tunisia, who lost the game 1-0, were furious that the official had called time minutes early, despite two penalties, nine substitutions and one goal in the game.

But this isn’t the first time Sikazwe has been in the middle when controversy has struck.

The referee was once accused of corruption in Africa after he took charge of a CAF Champions League game between Angolan outfit Primeiro de Agosto and Esperance de Tunis of Tunisia.

Sikazwe was initially suspended following the way he handled the match.

But after an investigation, the referee was found not guilty.

“The Disciplinary Board decided that there is no sufficient evidence to implicate the involvement of Mr. Janny Sikazwe regarding the allegations of corruption made against him,” the verdict read after an investigation.

Sikazwe became the first Zambian referee to officiate at a World Cup in 2018.

But even one of his games on the biggest football stage of all hit the headlines during the tournament.

Sikazwe was in charge of Poland and Japan’s group match during the competition in Russia, with the game ending 1-0 to Poland.

Japan still qualified for the next round, along with their opponents, after a farcical end to the encounter.

The Asian side were heading out when Jan Bednarek scored for Poland but were given a reprieve by Colombia defender Yerry Mina’s header in the group’s other game.

News filtered through to the Volgograd Arena that Japan would join Poland in the next round with a 1-0 loss, both teams were content to sit back and play the ball around leisurely for the final period of the game.
