Nigerian defender Akpe Victory is edging closer to the biggest move of his career so far, following interests from Europe’s bigger clubs, Soccernet.ng reports.
In only a few months, Victory has risen from grassroots football in Lagos to the centre of a transfer battle involving some of the continent’s biggest clubs.
The 19-year-old centre-back, who currently plays for Hungarian top-flight side Zalaegerszegi TE, is attracting serious attention from Rangers, Benfica, Basel and Strasbourg, while scouts from clubs in Germany, Spain and Italy have also been closely monitoring his progress.
Interest in Victory has intensified ahead of the summer transfer window following an impressive breakthrough season in Hungary. Swiss giants Basel have already seen two bids rejected by Zalaegerszegi, according to transfer market Ben Jacobs. The Hungarian club insists that any deal for the Nigerian talent must come close to their reported €5 million valuation.

Rangers are also pushing strongly for the youngster. The Scottish club is searching for long-term defensive solutions after another difficult title race against Celtic and sees Victory as a player who could develop into a cornerstone of their defence.
Portuguese powerhouse Benfica has entered the race as well. The Lisbon club has built a reputation for identifying and developing elite young talent before selling them for huge profits, and Victory is viewed as another player who fits that model.
French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg have also joined the chase after being impressed by how quickly the Nigerian adapted to the demands of European football after arriving from Lithuania only months ago.
What makes the situation particularly interesting is the breadth of interest. Clubs from seven European football nations are now tracking the defender, turning what began as a promising season into one of the most competitive transfer races involving a Nigerian youngster this summer.

The growing interest in Akpe Victory is rooted in more than just potential. At 1.95 metres (6ft 5in), the Nigerian combines physical dominance with qualities that modern clubs increasingly value in central defenders.
Coaches and scouts have been impressed by his ability to win aerial duels, defend one-on-one situations and remain composed when playing out from the back. He is comfortable carrying the ball forward and has even shown he can contribute in attack.
During the 2025-26 campaign, Victory registered one goal and one assist in 18 appearances for Zalaegerszegi across league and cup competitions. His first professional goal came on 28 February in a 1-1 draw against Diósgyőri VTK, a moment that showed his threat from set-pieces.
His journey has also demonstrated an ability to adapt quickly. After developing at Hyraj FC Academy in Lagos, Victory moved to Lithuanian side FK Banga Gargždai in February 2025. Rather than struggle with the transition to European football, he established himself immediately, starting all of Banga’s final 14 league matches and making 28 league appearances overall.

He also featured in UEFA Conference League qualifying matches, gaining valuable continental experience before earning a move to Hungary in January 2026.
At Zalaegerszegi, he again settled rapidly, making more than 16 appearances and playing over 1,200 minutes despite arriving midway through the season. Such consistency at a young age has convinced scouts that he possesses the mentality required to succeed at a higher level.
Another factor driving interest is his age. At just 19, Victory is still years away from reaching his peak. Clubs such as Benfica, Basel and Strasbourg see an opportunity to develop him further, while Rangers view him as a defender capable of helping both now and in the future.
The growing list of admirers is likely to push Victory’s value even higher, a development that would delight Zalaegerszegi.
