The last episode of MTV Base’s Behind The Story was so lit! The show’s host, Sammy Walsh, sat down with afro-pop singer and songwriter, Fireboy, as he spoke about the hustle on his path to fame.
It was cool to see the work that he has put in to get to where he is right now. Here are some lessons we learned from watching Fireboy’s Behind The Story interview:
1. Find ways to make money from doing what you love
Even before Fireboy discovered his musical talent, he used to write poems. After finding out he could sing, and for the period when he was a relatively unknown artiste, he used to make ends meet by writing songs for other artistes.
2. No risk, no reward
It is not the norm for a new artiste to drop an entire album all at once, but that is what Fireboy did. On the show with Sammy Walsh, he acknowledged that dropping Laughter, Tears, and Goosebumps was a risky move, but that it paid off.
3. Pull yourself up
Right after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Fireboy moved to Lagos to stay with friends. As he spent time working on his music, he discovered that nobody was going to help him, but that he’d have to put in the work and let the quality of his work attract the right people.
4. Have a solid support system
Fireboy reminisced about his time as an upcoming artiste. According to him, he had a number of friends who believed in his talent, and would usually lobby to ensure he got opportunities to perform at events happening around town. There is nothing like having friends who believe in your dream.
5. Transform your pain to gain
Even as an ‘underground’ artiste, he knew his worth. A bad experience at a show made him decide to focus even more on his music and work on creating a unique sound that would get him the kind of attention he deserves. The good news is that it worked.
