Building Collapses In Isale Eko, Lagos Island, Victims Hospitalised

A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Thursday, as a residential building collapsed along Adeniji Adele Road in Isale Eko, Lagos Island, leaving several people injured and hospitalised.

The collapse triggered an immediate emergency response, with personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Nigerian Police Force, and other critical rescue agencies rushing to the scene to conduct rescue operations and manage the aftermath.

Victims Rescued and Hospitalised

According to official updates posted on LASTMA’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account, several individuals trapped under the debris were successfully rescued and rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

“There is a report of an overnight collapsed building along Adeniji Adele road, at Isale Eko. LASTMA personnel, other emergency responders and men of the Nigerian Police Force are all on ground. Victims rescued from the building have been taken to the hospital for treatment,” the agency wrote.

Traffic Diversions Implemented Around Scene

To avoid gridlock in the area, traffic diversions have been implemented, with motorists advised to take alternate routes. LASTMA confirmed that traffic is not currently disrupted along the corridor, thanks to on-site officers managing the flow.

“Our officials have diverted traffic from Zenith back through Oba’s Palace to make use of Enu Owa to their various destinations,” LASTMA added.

Ongoing Search and Rescue Operations

While the total number of casualties remains unconfirmed, search and rescue efforts are ongoing, with emergency teams still combing through the rubble in a bid to find and assist any remaining victims.

The affected building has been cordoned off for safety, as authorities continue to investigate the incident. The exact cause of the collapse has yet to be officially determined. However, experts often cite structural failures, poor maintenance, and aging infrastructure as frequent causes of such tragedies in Lagos Island’s densely populated areas.

Calls for Stronger Building Safety Enforcement

Incidents like this have reignited public calls for stricter enforcement of building safety regulations, especially in older parts of Lagos where many structures are long overdue for renovation or demolition.
