Dangote, Helen Clark, Polman Back Iweala’s WTO-DG Bid. Ngozi Reacts

Africa’s richest man and the Chairman Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has thrown his weight behind Okonjo-Iweala’s WTO-DG bid.

He made this known via his official Twitter handle.

In these challenging times @WTO needs the renowned skills and tested experience of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala @NOIweala to lead the organisation through identified obstacles and strengthen its position as the prime facilitator of international trade.

A vote for her by all is a step in the right direction. I fully endorse the candidature of @NOIweala to lead @WTO.

Aliko Dangote

NOI reacts:

Thank you Aliko my Brother for these wonderful words. As a globally acclaimed Businessman your knowledge about WTO and your confidence in my ability to serve is much appreciated.

Earlier, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Helen Clark, had joined a host of others including Julia Gillard and Gordon Brown in backing the former Finance Minister in her bid.

World needs a functioning multilateral trade organisation. @WTO needs new DG w/ leadership skills to bring diverse nations together 2 resolve obstacles 2 completing a trade round & reform the organisation. @NOIweala leadership skills are badly needed there.

Helen Clark

Thank You so much @HelenClarkNZ for your faith in my ability to Work with @WTO members to move the organization forward. @WTO is needed now more than ever to help the Multilateral Trading System work for all.

Dutch businessman, Paul Polman, who is a former Procter & Gamble President for Western Europe, Chief Financial Officer & VP of the Americas for Nestle’, and later CEO of Unilever, also backed NOI’s WTO-DG bid.

The new director general of the World Trade Organisation @wto must have the political gravitas to reform, renew and tackle truly 21st Century frictions. I believe Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (@NOIweala) is that leader:

Paul Polman

Refreshing to see Paul Polman’s assessment of @wto from a business perspective. Many thanks Paul for these insights and the confidence in my ability to work with members to deliver a renewed WTO.
