Aftermath of the Killing of five soldiers and an Airman by terrorists in an ambush along the Kaduna – Abuja road on Tuesday night, the Military has said the occurrence will not dampen its resolve to tackle insecurity.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba while making this statement at Strategic Inter-agency Policy Committee briefing at Police Force headquarters, said, “Though it us a thing of sadness when security personnel are killed in line of duty, in the military, we take pride in risking our lives for the safety of the country”.Major General Buba said that the incident of the recent suicide bombings in Gwoza resulting in the killing of innocent citizens and military personnel, “is what happens at the ending circle of terrorism. It is aimed attracting attention. It is aimed at regaining relevance. It is aimed at trying to recruit new members and it is aimed at reducing support for the troops and security agencies”.
He said, “We are in a state of war. As it is when you are involved in counter terrorism, counter insurgency across the country, in such situation, ugly things happen from time to time. What has happened in Gwoza is one of those terrible things. Whenever people are killed whether civilians or security personnel, it is a tragedy. However, our operations are going according to plan”.
He disclosed that those asking question as to why the Nigerian Army is planning to establish a school of Islamic Affairs are missing the point as the Army also have in place, a school of Chaplaincy for Christians.
“Being in the military does not make us not to be religiously inclined. There is always for improvement, to be better informed and educated on what you preach and talk about to the people.Speaking on operations to combat insecurity across the country, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi on behalf of the Committee said, “On June 12, terrorists executed coordinated attacks in Katsina, resulting in the tragic loss of over 50 residents and policemen. Similarly, on June 11, gunmen killed at least 25 individuals in a village raid, while Boko Haram attacked the Kano-Maiduguri Highway, with many feared abducted.
“Additionally, on June 25, bandits claimed the life of a Nigerian University Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Suicide bombings struck in Borno on June 30 after almost 5 years of such terror attack.
“Despite these challenges, the security agencies have demonstrated unwavering dedication to maintaining and preserving Nigeria’s territorial integrity and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
“The resolve and fighting spirit of our armed forces remain unshaken, leading to numerous successes across various theatres of operation.
“On June 4, the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) eliminated 140 terrorists and arrested 57 others in Borno. The Nigerian Military reported eliminating 2,245 terrorists and apprehending 3,682 others in the past three months, showcasing the sustained and effective operations against insurgent elements.
