Top Congolese artiste, orator, multi-instrumentalist and social activist Nkumu Katalay releases a new single titled “Bogiko,” (from Boni Ko) a Lingala word which translates to “What’s up with that.” Bogiko is an afro-disco, emerging from Nkumu Katalay’s style of music called Rumbiankfunk (Rumba within my Funk) which blends the sound of Congo to that of the Afro-Diaspora sound of the Americas.
Bogiko blends the Congolese snare rim-shot sound and muted guitar picking with that of the heavy bass sound of Disco similar to every Congolese music. Nkumu’s rusty voice tone calls out his love of Congo while ordering people to call out “Bogiko!!”.
In the song, the artist compares his deep love for congo to that of an emergency ambulance (a literary analogical word that Congolese songs utilize in many forms); it also took notes on the inseparable dualities both nature and society create.
After a successful release of his last single “Clear My Path” in August 2020, Nkumu wants to earn the trust of a wider audience across Africa that are just now coming across his body of work.
Indeed, “BOGIKO” is a hit song infused with deep African lyrics and beats that will sure drive you on the dance floor.
