Chelsea and Manchester City have been issued warning by the Premier League, stating they could face expulsion from the league.
The English football governing body emphasized that such could be the fate of both clubs if found guilty of breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
While City is contesting 115 charges brought by Premier League legal authorities since February 2023, Chelsea, who currently sit 11th, are yet to face charges.
The Blues financial misconduct during the Roman Abramovich era was flagged last summer, with payments to agents made outside the club’s books.
Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest’s recent deduction of four points by EPL serves as a precedent, as stated by an English FA’s commission.
The commission explained the context of Forest’s breach of Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), amounting to £34.5 million.
The commission also noted the range of sanctions available for FFP breaches, including warnings and even expulsion from the Premier League, particularly for major breaches.
They emphasized that while minor breaches may not warrant exit, major breaches could result in severe sanctions.
UK Sun Sport reports that the severity of the allegations against Chelsea and City suggests they could fall into the “major” category if proven.
