The Federal Government has fixed April 4, 2021, as the date for the reopening of the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) for international flights.
The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, said this on Monday at the joint national briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, in Abuja.
He also listed 15 April and 3 May for the reopening of the Port Harcourt, Rivers State and Enugu, Enugu State international airports respectively for international flights.
He denied that that the MAKIA and other airports closed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, were not reopened like others, for ulterior motive.
“The airports were shut down, like others across the world. We closed our airports as that was where the virus came into the country.
“We reopened some after many considerations with the other stakeholders. There was not ulterior motives for not reopening of the Kano or other airports. There are processes to be followed,” Sirika said.
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano had led a delegation to the minister’s office earlier in the month, seeking a reopening of the airport.
