The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad and urged citizens to use the occasion to promote unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
He noted that Nigeria’s diversity, human capital and natural resources remain important strengths, while calling on citizens to uphold the values of the country’s founding fathers and contribute to building a nation future generations can be proud of.
The minister also assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening national security, improving public safety and creating an environment where citizens can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations.
Tunji-Ojo described peace and stability as necessary conditions for national development, stressing the government’s commitment to achieving a “new Nigeria” through its Renewed Hope Agenda.
The declaration means workers and other eligible residents will observe Thursday, October 1, as a public holiday as the country marks 66 years of independence.
Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960.
