FIFA bans fans from bringing Water bottles Into stadiums at World Cup

FIFA has banned fans from bringing refillable water bottles into stadiums for the upcoming World Cup, reversing an earlier policy that allowed transparent reusable bottles of up to one litre.

The decision, confirmed in an updated code of conduct for ticket holders, has sparked criticism from supporters’ groups and raised concerns about fan welfare amid expected extreme summer heat in North America.

FIFA said the move is intended to “prevent risk and injury to players and attendees,” adding that outside bottles are already prohibited at several venues and the policy is being standardised across all tournament stadiums.

A FIFA spokesperson said the organisation remains focused on safety and heat management, noting that host cities will provide cooling measures such as misting stations, hydration zones, fans, and cooling tents around stadium areas.

However, fans will still be allowed to purchase bottled water inside stadiums, with pricing expected to be consistent with other major events at each venue.

The change has drawn backlash from supporters’ groups, including the Free Lions England fans’ embassy, which described the decision as a reversal of earlier assurances that fans would be able to bring their own water.

The group questioned the timing of the change and raised concerns about hydration access during high temperatures, warning that it could be seen as prioritising commercial interests over supporter welfare.

Experts have also raised concerns about extreme heat during the tournament. Studies from World Weather Attribution suggest several matches could be played under conditions where heat stress becomes a serious risk, with some fixtures potentially exceeding safe thresholds for outdoor play.

FIFA has already introduced additional measures, including hydration breaks during matches, to help protect players from heat-related risks.

The debate continues as organisers prepare for a tournament expected to take place under some of the most challenging weather conditions in World Cup history.
