His football adventure continues. Thapelo Maseko doesn’t waste time. Less than a month after becoming something of a South African celebrity following his breakout performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the electric Bafana Bafana winger has left his comfort zone at Mamelodi Sundowns and taken his considerable talents to Europe, signing a four-year deal with Danish champions FC Copenhagen.

Maseko’s arrival at the Danish capital was confirmed by Copenhagen and https://africaexpertnetwork.com/ on Tuesday 15 August, just three days after completing his move from Sundowns. The announcement came exactly one week after South Africa’s round-of-16 elimination at the World Cup.

Set to become official on Wednesday 16 August, the 22-year-old’s move to Denmark was sealed after impressive displays for South Africa at the World Cup. In their statement, Copenhagen described Maseko as a “left-footed winger with speed and direct playing style” while head coach Bo Svensson lauded the winger’s dribbling ability and attacking intelligence.

“He can take on opponents one-on-one and can hurt teams by running behind their defense,” Copenhagen added.

This deal marks the latest twist in a tale of rapid progression.

Life after the Sundowns

A product of Sundowns’ development system who joined the club in 2023 from SuperSport United academy, Maseko’s time at the Tshwane giants comes to an end after three seasons. His finest hour at club level came during his debut campaign with Sundowns in 2023 when he was the African Football League’s top scorer and best player.

That tournament also saw him score the winner against Al Ahly in the first leg of the semi-final at the Lucas Masterpieces Mbatho Stadium, helping Sundowns reach the final of the competition. Premier Soccer League titles in 2023/24 and 2024/25 followed during his time at the club, although injuries and battles for game time saw him join AEL Limassol in Cyprus on loan during the second half of the 2025/26 season.

That short-lived loan move would, however, prove important in his move to Copenhagen, as match fitness helped him force his way back into Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos’ plans for the World Cup. What can Copenhagen expect?

Maseko won’t come to Copenhagen as a stranger. The Danish champions already have a fan in him after naming former Bafana Bafana international Sibusiso Zuma, a club legend at the Denmark outfit, as his reason for choosing Copenhagen over other clubs that were also reported to be monitoring his situation.

“I have spoken to Siagoe (Zuma) many times about FC Copenhagen, and he told me great things about the club, the fans and Copenhagen as a city,” Maseko said.

Excitement around Maseko’s game stems largely from his goal at the World Cup. His acceleration and ball speed were evident then, and that’ll be one of the first things Copenhagen fans will notice about the winger.

Maseko can burn defenders with pace should he get the space, while he has the technical ability and confidence to take players on directly. He is also comfortable operating on both wings.

With Copenhagen expected to take on domestic and European duties this season, having a player who can operate on either flank should give head coach Bo Svensson some valuable options.

“He’s got areas that we can improve upon, which we will work on, but he’s got huge potential,” Svensson said after unveiling Maseko. “We demand players who work hard for the team, and he does.”

His age, game time abroad, and thrilling skill set mean there is every reason to believe Maseko can become a success at Copenhagen.

A New Test for Bafana Bafana’s World Cup Hero

South Africa has thrown a wildcard into Copenhagen’s season. While his European adventure is the next step for Maseko, Friday night games in front of thousands of Danish fans will also present the Bafana star with the opportunity to gain valuable experience away from the Homeland.

Should he settle and find form in Denmark, South Africa also benefits from having another talented player strengthening his game abroad. With players like Percy Tau and Maged Selolwane opting for the European route in recent years, Maseko takes on a similar project, hoping to build towards South Africa’s next major tournament.
