Huntelaar Arrested For Misconduct During Bundesliga Match

Despite scoring the final goal of the fiercely contested derby, it was the Dutch International’s brother who grabbed the headlines after he was arrested for violent conduct following the conclusion of the game
His goal may have secured his side a point in the Ruhr derby, but Klass-Jan Huntelaar’s spirits may be hampered by the fact his brother Niek was arrested for hurling stones at a group of Borussia Dortmund fans shortly after full time.

The Revier derby is Germany’s most turbulent fixture, and has seen many clashes between rival fans over the years, with police willing to almost ignore the Cologne-Bayern and Leverkusen derby that occurred on the same day just a short distance away in order to maximize their presence at Schalke’s Veltins-Arena on Sunday.

Fans of the home side gathered in a parking lot outside the stadium to throw stones at Dortmund fans as they were leaving at the end of the game.

Police quickly intervened, with some extremist turning their aim towards the law enforcement officers in order to aid their colleagues’ escape, resulting in a number of suspects being arrested, including 34-year-old Niek Huntelaar.

Whilst police spokesman Olaf Brauweiler confirmed the incident, the Dutch striker told a very different version of the story to Bild.

“My brother was at the game with his family,” stated the Schalke striker. “He was attacked on his way to the car by a Borussia Dortmund fan. He has committed a blunder, and he massively regrets his actions.”
The incident is currently being investigated but Niek now faces criminal charges as a result of his actions.
